Why Do People Get Tattoos?

Over the years tattoos have become less taboo. They are no longer just for rebellious teenagers. Now even older men and women are going to have tattoos done.

Tattoos may serve as a means of identification. Certain gangs and even fraternities are notorious for their tattooed images which should only be worn by members of the group. These are so important as a status symbol that if a member leaves the group they may be forced to have it removed. Tattoos also may vary based on rank or position. Usually the tattoo is a symbol, the meaning of which is understood by members but may be puzzling to outsiders.

Tattoos may serve as a symbol of belonging in other ways as well. Teenagers are sometimes accused of getting tattoos simply to fit in with a certain crowd. On the other hand, the decision not to get a tattoo may be because one does not want to be associated with a certain crowed or because of the negative stereotypes associated with people who have tattoos.

Tattooing is an art and a means of expression. Some tattoo artistes and enthusiasts get full body tattoos to show their dedication to the art. Others get it simply because they appreciate the art and see it as a form of beautification. Many females believe tattoos make them look and feel sexier while some guys believe tattoos are a show of strength and machismo. While not everyone shares this view, it cannot be disputed that a lot of persons get tattoos because they feel it enhances their appearance.

Dedications and tattoos of remembrance are also popular. Persons may get images or names of family members tattooed on their bodies. They may do this in memory of friends who have passed away or persons who are dear to them. Since the tattoo is permanent, this is a strong gesture of affection. Tattoos may also indicate the things that are important to a person. For example, if someone is religious they may tattoo an angel or a cross or some other symbol representative of an important belief or aspect of their religion. It is not uncommon for persons to do this as a reminder to themselves of the importance or religion perhaps instead of a confirmation of the importance they already place on it.

The decision to get a tattoo should always be a personal one. It should not be due to peer pressure or done on a whim. It should be a well thought out decision since it is something that will stay with you for life, literally. Tattoos can be sacred or cherished expressions of art. However, if regretted it can be like a scar and constant reminder of a past mistake.
